TO HAVE A DEEP INFORMATION ABOUT THE YASUNI - ITT please click HERE

With the implementation of the Yasuní-ITT initiative, Ecuador would forgo approximately $350 millons of dollars per annum as a contrubuition toward achleving the twin gobal objectives of limiting green house gas emissions and preserving critial ecosystems and biodiversity. This is a significant amount for a country with per capita income sightly over $3.000 dollars per annum, and where allmost 40% of itd 13 millon inhavitants live in poverty. The socieconomic conditions of the 260.000 people living in Yasuní are of extreme poverty and lacking in basic services.

For this and more reasons get join early, to the thousands of people how are helping in this project, we only need your name and sign, let´s save together the Yasuní.

The Proposal

The Ecuadorian Goverment`s proposal to forgo devolopment of the ITT oil reserves, located in Yasuní National Park, was officially launched on June 5, 2007. The Yasuní-ITT initiative would contribiute toward global climate stabilization by permanently sequestering millions of tons of CO2, while simultaneusly protecting one of the most biodiverse and culturally sensitive areas on earth. The initiative represents one of the most pioneering proposals in history from an oil producing nation.

The initiative proposes keeping close to one billion barrels of heavy crude in the Ishpingo- Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) oilfields inexploited in exchange for international compensation that would amount to at least 50% of Ecuador´s projected forgone renueve from developing the ITT oil block.

Ecuador offers industrialized countries the opportunity to limit global carbon emissions and to contribute at the same time to the preservation of one of the most biologically unique regions of the world, Yasuní National Park. The Yasuni-ITT initiative has the potential to create opportunities for cooperation with other countries. international organisms and civil cociety in the effort to reduce world-wide carbon emissions. If the initiative is successful, this small corner of the planet will become a model for the global energy transition.

The initiative is accompanied by the creation of the Yasuní-ITT Fund, wich will direct compensation toward implementing Ecuador´s funding priorities under the goverment´s National Development Plan. These priorities include devolping alternatives to the explotation of oil in sensitive areas; and development of new energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal energy.

The Yasuni-ITT Fund will also be commited toward capacity-building and invesment in ecotourism, creation of an agenda for the comprehensive reparation of environmental damages that includes health, education and acological restoration.

The Yasuní Biosphere Reserve

Yasuní is considered one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity in the world, In 1989, it was declarated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. On February 2, 1999, a 1.8 millon acre area on southern border of Yasuní National Park, within the Huaorani Territory know to be used by the Tagaeri-Taromenani and other non contactec groups, was declarated an "Intangible Zone" where all types of extration activities are banned in perpetulty.

Yasuní National Park is an Amazonian ecological reserve encompassing more than 2.4 millon acres of tropical rainforest. The forest in home of over 4.000 species of plants, 173 especies of mammals, and 610 species of birds. In a single hectare of Yasuní, there are allmost as many species of native trees and shurbs (estimated to be 680) as there are in all North America.Yasuní National Park protects close to 40% of all the species of mammals in the Amazon basin, and a large part of its flora and fauna is still unknown.

Yasuni´s incomparable biological diversity is due in part a historical event that back to the Quaternary Period, the last great geological epoch, wich is subdivided in two parts: the Holocene, wich corresponds to the last 10.000 years of human history, and the Pleistocene, wich began approximately two millon years ago and ended 10.000 years ago. During the Pleistocene, sever recuring periods of global cooling took place, known as glaciations, during which the polar icecaps grew considerably, leaving large areas of the planet covered with ice. Yasuni was one of the few places on earth that mantained tolerable climatic conditions for life, becoming a locus of plant diversity and a refuge for animal migration. These few and privilegied points of the planet are called "Pleistocene Refuges of liffe" and Yasuni National Park is an artifact of this unique geologic heritage.
